It's good to know what we are wearing..
COTTON:
Cotton is a soft, fluffy, staple fiber that grows in a form known as a boll around the seeds of the cotton plant, a shrub native to tropical and subtropical regions around the world, including the Americas, India and Africa. The fiber most often is spun into yarn or thread and used to make a soft, breathable textile, which is the most widely used natural-fiber cloth in clothing today.
ELASTANE FIBRES:
Elastane fibres, better known under their trade names, Lycra and Dorlastan, represent a further high point in the development of man-made fibres. Invented in 1937 in Germany, elastane has properties not found in nature, the most important being an extraordinary elasticity.
Compared to rubber, elastane has both greater tear resistance and durability and a tension capacity two or three times greater, at a third of the weight. Elastane is used in all areas where a high degree of permanent elasticity is required, as, for example, in tights, sportswear, swimwear, corsetry, and in woven and knitted fabrics.
When stretched, it always reverts to its original form. Elastane thus is a prerequisite for fashionable or functional apparel which is intended to cling to the body, while at the same time remaining comfortable.
POLYESTER FIBRES:
Polyester was one of the great man-made fibre discoveries of the forties and has been manufactured on an industrial scale since 1947. Polyester fibres are the first choice for apparel and are used in trousers, skirts, dresses, suits, jackets, blouses and outdoor clothing.
Blends with cotton and virgin wool are very popular. They are often referred to as the "classical blend". This is normally a combination of 55% polyester and 45% wool.
Polyester fibres are particularly resistant to light and weather and can withstand climatic effects.
They can be used where lightness and fineness are primary requirements.
Polyester fibres are very well suited to blends with natural fibres.
Fabrics in 100% polyester, or blends with an appropriately high proportion, are very crease-resistant and retain shape even when affected by moisture.
Polyester fibres have good moisture transport and dry quickly.
ACRYLIC FIBRES:
75 % of acrylic fibres are used in apparel, 20% in home furnishing and 5% in industrial end-uses. In apparel the acrylic fibres are used, for instance, in jumpers, waistcoats, cardigans, jackets, socks, knee-high stockings, training and jogging suits, either pure or in blends for example with wool. The modacrylic fibre, a modified form of acrylic, is found in flame-retardant garments, children's and baby wear, and in dolls clothes and soft toys.
Acrylic fibres have very good heat retention and fastness to light.
Very good shape retention, durability, easy care and quick dry qualities.
Qualities such as its wool-like feel and bulk make it pre-destined for use in the knitwear sector. The positive features of acrylic fibres come into their own when they are blended with a suitable proportion of wool or other natural fibres: the wool needs practically no additional finishing, does not felt when washed and is significantly easier to care for.
With sportswear, training and jogging suits particularly benefit from the special advantages of acrylic fibres - be it pure or blended: low water absorption, quicker water transport, light and weather resistance.
POLYAMIDE FIBRES:
Nylon and Perlon:
Polyamide fibres are primarily used for clothing, in stockings and tights, lingerie, corsetry as well as sports- and swimwear.
According to their profile and further processing, the fibres can be quite fine and smooth or crimped, or bright or dull.
On care labels the polyamide fibre is often designated as "PA".
Polyamide fibres are very durable and resistant to abrasion.
They have high elasticity.
They are light and fine.
They are easy to wash and quick-drying.
Polyamide fibres guarantee shape retention.
VISCOSE:
iscose is the most important of the cellulosic man-made fibres.
Viscose is made up for linings and mostly light summer wear, such as dresses, skirts, blouses, shirts, jackets and trousers. Knitwear fashion has also discovered viscose.
The primary material is cellulose derived from wood.Extremely thin continuous threads are produced, viscose filament yarns, mainly used for making silk-like textiles. There are also viscose staple fibres, made by cutting the filaments into specific lengths. Viscose staple fibres are mostly processed into cotton-, wool- or linen- like yarns and fabrics.
On care labels viscose man-made fibres are often designated as "CV".

did you know..
..that
elastane fibres can be stretched from four to seven times their length, reverting to their original length when the tension is relaxed. Elastane has the highest stretch tension of all textile raw materials.
Two per cent elastane is enough to make trousers, for instance, retain their shape. For body-shaped silhouette and high stretch capacity, i.e. in swimwear, corsetry or sportswear, 15 - 40% elastane is used.
In woven and knitted fabrics elastane increases shape retention and accelerates crease recovery.
Elastane is not sensitive to transpiration, make-up, cosmetics, sun cream or sea water. For example swimwear with elastane should be rinsed out after bathing.
